Every wedding starts with a unique engagement story. This winter I got to witness one of the most romantic proposal stories I will be telling for a long time.
I never met Daniel before, but he approached me based on a recommendation from a friend we have in common (thanks Rina).
He has already been planning this proposal for a while, and chose the best place for the big moment ; Notre Dame Basilica in the old port! It is the most romantic place city has to offer, and its even more gorgeous this time of year thanks to the beautiful lit tree in front of it. And that is where it all happened.
At first, I was really scared this photoshoot might not go well; the area had some light but not enough for brightly lit photos and i knew I should be ready to embrace some grains. In addition, the surprise nature of the shoot makes it more challenging. And to top it all, temperatures were supposed to drop to -30 on that week.
Despite all these not so perfect conditions, I didn't want to miss this romantic proposal and got my gear ready!
To prepare for the shoot, I went location scouting few days before to test the camera settings and the light . Then, the morning of, I met Daniel at the old port to rehearse for the proposal and coordinate the logistics of the shoot.
Daniel started the evening by taking Catherine for dinner at a nearby restaurant. And he was set to be by the tree and propose to Catherine at 7pm.
Before the dinner is over and the the action started, I was already hiding behind the fountain in front of Notre Dame and waiting for Daniel and Catherine to approach the lit tree.
at 6.55 I saw a couple approaching, all bundled up in winter jackets and beanies. I took off my gloves , got my camera in position, and got ready to start shooting. The couple stood under the tree and started talking and kissing. I took few pictures and waited for the soon to be fiance to get on his knees, but he never did!
Then the couple just walked away with no proposal.... I was confused but it turns out they were just another happy couple who thought the tree was a great romantic place for a hug.
Few minutes later, Catherine and Daniel arrived. And this time, the man got down on his knees and to Catherine's surprise, he took out the ring he's been hiding in his pocket the whole time.
Catherine couldn't Stop smiling and crying and of course it was a "YES!"
Things went by really fast and I had to make sure I got all the necessary shots before the fiance gets up again.
Then, for 10 minutes or so, the newly engaged couple were hugging and kissing and I was taking photos like a papparazi. And it only took 10 minutes for all of us to start freezing and look for somewhere warm to snap some more photos.
I had a lot of fun preparing for this proposal and document the big YES moment for Daniel and Catherine. In the short time I spent with them, I could clearly see the amazing chemistry and love between the two and I will be looking forward to get the chance to take some more photos of them. This time, hopefully in a warmer weather ^_^
